Disruptive view of phenomenological psychopathology at mental illness

Mental illness can be viewed from various perspectives within psychopathology. However, despite its limitations, operational-pragmatic psychopathology has been the hegemonic view. The aim of this article is to present the disruptive view of phenomenological psychopathology based on the study of three clinical cases. The participants answered the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and underwent 30 individual consultations to understand their temporal experience using the phenomeno-structural method. The young women's scores on the scale suggested moderate depression in two of them and severe depression in the other. Despite having some similar behavioral symptoms, their temporal experiences were unique, sharing the absence of the future felt as openness. Thus, it can be concluded that phenomenological psychopathology plays a relevant role in the discussion about mental illness. For some phenomenologists, it can be an alternative to the current model and, for others, it is possible to integrate these two perspectives, promoting a complete and effective approach to mental health care.
