The construction of motherhood from a phenomenon-structural perspective

This article investigates the experience of motherhood, from a Structural Phenomenon perspective, emphasizing the impact of social pressures and the process of becoming a mother. It addresses the historical and cultural influence that idealizes motherhood and the emotional and psychological challenges faced during pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium, with a focus on women's mental health, which is often neglected. The initial psychic fusion between mother and baby is discussed, highlighting the need to adapt to the structural immaturities of the newborn in the dimensions of temporality, spatiality, corporeality and interpersonality. The concept of the ‘eclipsed self’ is introduced to illustrate how the demands of motherhood can obscure a woman's identity. The conclusion is that it is important to have a psychological clinic that is sensitive to these issues and provides support for both mother and baby, recognising women as integral subjects, beyond their role as carers.
