Social alienation and mental disorder

This paper argues that the suffering arising from socially rooted alienation is endemic in contemporary society and distinct from a psychopathological substrate. The differentiation between social alienation and mental disorder is rare in the psychopathological literature, which limits the development of effective and specific approaches for both conditions. Phenomenological psychopathology, therefore, offers the possibility of analyzing and critiquing the individual’s social condition—a possibility that can be lost if the focus shifts toward examining the conditions of possibility of consciousness in disregard of the milieu in which the subject is immersed. This study thus seeks to distinguish social alienation from mental disorder and to demonstrate the risk of pathologizing and further stigmatizing socially alienated individuals, while indicating differential and appropriate treatments for subjects who suffer from both psychopathological and social forms of distress.
