Abstract

The phenomenon of sexuality, traditionally studied by dualistic explanatory theories, is of the domain of being in general. Hence, the need for an a priori foundation of sexual experience as a possibility inherent in the human condition. Firstly, we revisit the sciences of the 19th (Krafft-Ebing’s work and neurobiological models of sexual response) and 20th centuries (Freud’s psychoanalysis), and on the other end of the epistemological spectrum of sexuality, Kenzaburo Oe’s literature. Then, we designate chapter 5 of Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology of Perception as the foundational writing of the sexual being. Using the phenomenological method, Merleau-Ponty conceives of sexuality as an original intentional form, pre-reflectively anchored in the consciousness and conditioned by corporeal intersubjectivity. The conception of the sexual being points to a (signification) link between existence and sexuality. Lastly, as evidence of and access way to the sexual being, we present two application cases of sexuality phenomenology in psychopathology.
